CAV: Slovenia
I visited CAV Wine Bar after work, to taste the Slovenia wine flight.
I had the first two wines (a Chardonnay and a Pinot Gris) with the Halibut Crudo and the Cornmeal Fried Green Tomatoes.
And, I enjoyed the last two wines (a Cabernet Franc and a Muscat) with a single cheese plate.
It was an unusual night at CAV.
It was an unusual night in part because Pamela had a photographer in the bar, taking pictures for the website. I was happy to sign a release — after all, I was there with a camera, too — and to occasionally rearrange my wine and food for the sake of a better picture. And, I had an extra taste of the Chardonnay, because the empty glass just didn’t look right. I mean… it was for art, right?
Pamela recalled that it was the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, so she wrote the title of the speech and its date (August 28, 1963) on the blackboard.
Here are the wines, with some of Pamela’s comments:
- Chardonnay “Solo”, 2005, Kogl, Podravje, Slovenia
simple but beautifully exhibits the essence of the fruit and minerality of the terroir - Pinot Gris “Reserva”, 2004, Batic, Vipava Valley, Slovenia
body and a good dose of vanilla - Cabernet Franc Reserve, 2003, Batic, Vipava, Slovenia
medium bodied with violets, coffee beans, chocolate and red fruit - Yellow Muskat “Galileus”, 2006, Tilia Wine Farm, Vipava Valley, Slovenia
luscious with fresh apricot, peach fruit, hints of orange peel and floral overtones
And, my dinner:
- Local Halibut Crudo with melon, seabean and Serrano chili
- Cornmeal Fried Green Tomatoes with white corn, fire-roasted peppers and buttermilk dressing
The cheese was a Peccorino, but not the one that used to be on the menu — and this one was not listed on the current menu. So, all I can say is that it was delicious and went well with the last two wines.
I also bought two bottles from August’s Featured Wine Flight: A Taste of Spain — the O Aforado and the Bodegas Montebaco Pago Senda Misa Crianza. I asked Pamela to hold those for me until later in the week. I suppose I could have carried them home tonight, but this gives me an excuse to return…
